Squirrel Entry Point Repair and Exclusion – Waterloo

Job Overview

Location: Waterloo, Ontario

Structure: Three-storey brick residential home

Problem: Squirrel activity and noise at the front third-storey roofline

Service: Squirrel removal and exclusion

Visits: Two visits

Summary

Our team addressed squirrel activity reported at the upper front roofline of a three-storey brick home in Waterloo. Inspection confirmed multiple entry points along the drip edge and soffit intersections. Humane squirrel removal was completed using one-way doors, followed by permanent exclusion with galvanized steel mesh. A final visit confirmed the activity had stopped and all temporary devices were removed.

Background / Property Context

The property is a three-storey brick house with a steep roofline and aging wooden components at the roof-to-soffit intersections. The height and layout required working-at-heights precautions and a two-technician setup for safe access.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported persistent squirrel noises coming from the front of the house near the third-storey roofline, raising concerns about potential interior damage and ongoing activity.

Inspection & Findings

Exterior inspection identified two separate openings on either side of the front roofline where the roof intersected with the soffit. The wooden drip edge was exposed due to recessed shingles and showed visible chew damage. Debris consistent with nesting material was visible within the cavity behind the opening. No interior access was required for this service.

Cause Analysis

The recessed shingles exposed the wooden drip edge, creating a vulnerable access point. Weathered wood at the roofline was easier for squirrels to chew through. Elevated rooflines with limited visibility from the ground often go unnoticed until animal activity becomes audible.

Treatment / Removal

During the first visit, our team installed a one-way door over the primary entry point to allow the squirrel to exit without re-entry. Waterproof galvanized steel mesh was secured along adjacent openings to prevent further access while maintaining humane removal practices.

Exclusion & Repairs

All identified gaps along the drip edge and soffit intersection were reinforced using galvanized steel mesh, fastened securely to conform to the roofline contours. Materials were selected to withstand weather exposure and prevent future chewing at these locations.

 Outcome & Confirmation

On the second visit, the homeowner confirmed that squirrel activity had ceased. The one-way door was removed, and the exclusion work was reinspected. No further signs of activity were observed, and all entry points remained secure.

Technician Notes

The initial inspection and installation were completed by Andrew, with a second technician present to assist due to the height of the structure. All work was performed safely and in accordance with humane wildlife removal practices.
