Summary
We responded to reports of nighttime attic noise at a detached home in Kitchener. Our team completed a full inspection, identified an active roofline entry point, and carried out humane raccoon exclusion along with preventative vent and soffit sealing. A follow-up visit confirmed that activity had ceased and all temporary devices were removed.

The structure was a detached, single-story residential home with a raised foundation and a multi-slope shingle roof. The roofline included multiple vents and soffit intersections, which are common access points for raccoons when materials loosen over time.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported hearing loud movement in the attic during overnight hours. The timing and nature of the sounds raised concerns about a larger wildlife species accessing the attic space.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial visit, our technician completed both interior and exterior inspections. An active entry point was identified at a soffit intersection where building materials had separated. Several roof and plumbing vents were also noted as vulnerable due to their exposure and location along the roof slopes.
Photos taken during inspection show a visible opening at a soffit corner and multiple roof penetrations prior to exclusion work.
Cause Analysis
Raccoons commonly target roofline intersections and vents because these areas provide shelter and direct access to attic spaces. Aging soffit materials and overlapping roof components can create gaps large enough for entry. Once established, raccoons will repeatedly use the same access point unless properly excluded.
Treatment / Removal
On the first visit, a humane one-way door was installed at the identified soffit entry point to allow the raccoon to exit without re-entry. As part of a comprehensive prevention approach, seven roof vents were secured with galvanized steel vent cages, and two plumbing vents were reinforced with galvanized steel mesh.
The soffit intersection was fully sealed using galvanized steel mesh to restore the building envelope and prevent future access. All work was completed in accordance with humane wildlife removal practices.
Exclusion & Repairs
Galvanized steel materials were mechanically fastened to ensure long-term durability. Vent guards were fitted flush to the roof surface, and mesh screening was contoured to the roofline and soffit geometry. Photos after completion show uniform vent protection and sealed intersections across the roof.
Outcome & Confirmation
At the second visit, the homeowner confirmed that attic activity had stopped. Our technician returned to remove the one-way doors and completed a full inspection of all exclusion points. No new entry attempts or wildlife activity were observed, and the installation remained intact. The job was confirmed complete with no further issues reported.
