Job Overview
Location: Kitchener, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey house with steep roof
Problem: Morning attic noises consistent with squirrel activity
Service: Squirrel removal and full exterior exclusion
Visits: Two
Summary
We completed a two-visit squirrel removal and exclusion service on a detached two-storey home in Kitchener. The issue was resolved through humane one-way door installation, followed by comprehensive screening of roof and wall vent openings. A final inspection confirmed the squirrels had exited and no further activity was present.
Background / Property Context
The property is a detached, two-storey residential home with a very steep roofline and multiple roof, wall, and soffit vent penetrations. These architectural features required working-at-heights access and careful coordination to ensure all potential wildlife entry points were addressed.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported hearing noises in the attic during the morning hours. The timing and location of the sounds were consistent with squirrel movement above the living space.
Inspection & Findings
Our team conducted both exterior and interior inspections. Activity indicators were traced to wall vent openings, with additional risk areas identified along the roofline. Several vents and soffit intersections were found to be accessible to squirrels due to their height and proximity to roof surfaces.
Photos from the site show screened roof vents, wall vents, plumbing vents, soffit intersections, and chimney-related roof components after exclusion work was completed.
Cause Analysis
Squirrels commonly target elevated structures with multiple vent openings for warmth and shelter. On this property, the steep roof and numerous exterior penetrations created accessible entry opportunities. Once inside, attic spaces provide insulation and protection, making them attractive nesting areas.
Treatment / Removal
During the first visit, humane squirrel removal measures were implemented. Two one-way squirrel doors were installed at separate entry points, allowing the animals to exit without re-entry. No trapping or lethal methods were used.
Accumulated squirrel droppings within the affected area were removed, and the space was disinfected to reduce contamination and odour.
Exclusion & Repairs
To prevent future entry, we completed full exterior exclusion work, including:
- Installation of galvanized steel cages over six roof vents
- Installation of galvanized steel cages over seven wall vents
- Sealing of four soffit-to-roof intersections with galvanized steel mesh
- Screening of one plumbing vent with galvanized steel mesh
All materials were mechanically fastened and shaped to match the structure, ensuring airflow was maintained while blocking wildlife access.
Outcome & Confirmation
At the second visit, the homeowner confirmed that all attic noise had stopped. The two one-way doors were removed, and all exclusion work was inspected. No further wildlife activity was observed or reported, and the job was confirmed complete.
Technician Notes
The work required careful roof access due to slope and winter conditions. Andrew completed all inspections, installations, and follow-up checks, confirming that exclusion coverage was intact and functioning as intended.
