Job Overview
Location: Kitchener, Ontario
Structure: Two-storey residential house with brick lower level, wood siding upper level, and large deck overhang
Problem: Squirrel activity reported at a first-storey washroom vent
Service: Squirrel removal and full exterior exclusion
Visits: Two visits
Summary
We responded to a report of ongoing squirrel activity originating at a washroom wall vent on the first storey of the home. The issue had been present since the previous year and required a full exterior inspection. Squirrels had accessed two entry ways in the house, one through a wall vent and one through a soffit intersection. Work was completed over two visits during winter conditions, with exclusion measures installed and later confirmed effective.
Background / Property Context
The home is a two-storey structure with a larger second-floor footprint and multiple rooflines created by deck and overhang features. The combination of brick and wood siding, along with elevated vents and steep roof slopes, created several potential wildlife access points. Winter weather conditions added complexity to roof access and installation work.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported repeated squirrel activity and noise associated with a washroom vent on the first storey. The concern was that squirrels were entering or attempting to enter through the vent system and potentially accessing wall or attic spaces.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial visit, our technician conducted a full exterior inspection. Two active squirrel entry points were identified, along with two wall vents that were accessible to wildlife. As work progressed, two additional wall vents were discovered in separate areas of the structure. Rooflines were steep, with ice buildup present at the time of service.
Cause Analysis
Squirrels were able to access the structure due to exposed wall vents and vulnerable roofline transitions. Elevated vent locations and overhangs provided climbing access, while winter conditions did not deter activity. Once established, squirrels continued returning to the same areas seasonally.
Treatment / Removal
Humane, non-lethal squirrel removal methods were used. One-way doors were installed over the identified entry points to allow squirrels to exit without re-entry. Due to multiple access areas, two doors were required, including one in a separate section of the home. All work was completed by our team using safe, working-at-heights practices.
Exclusion & Repairs
After confirming no further interior activity, all identified wall vents were professionally screened using wildlife-resistant materials. Roofline and vent exclusions were secured to prevent future access. Installation accounted for the steep roof pitch and winter ice conditions present at the time of service.
Outcome & Confirmation
On the follow-up visit, the homeowner confirmed that all squirrel activity had ceased. One-way doors were removed, and all exclusion work was inspected and found intact. No further wildlife issues were reported following completion of the service.
Technician Notes
The work was completed over two visits by our technician, Andrew. Weather conditions included high winds, ice buildup, and a deceptively steep roof pitch, which extended installation time. Despite these limitations, all identified entry points and vents were successfully addressed, and exclusion was completed as planned.
