What you need to know about mud daubers

There are so many different kinds of wasps in the world. So many of them are threatening and aggressive and dangerous, but what about the mud dauber. They are quite literally the opposite of the yellowjacket in almost every way.

If you suspect wasp presence anywhere near or on your property, contact wasp removal  Kitchener for quick and safe removal.

Mud daubers are solitary creatures. They hibernate through the winter in a thick layer of mud that freezes and protects them from the elements. Come the spring the dauber’s nest thaws and the wasp, who was cozy and warm all winter wakes up and begins its yearly work. It first starts by digging holes in the mud and soil. It looks for grubs and small insects it can sting. The dauber then lays an egg beside the insect corpse and buries it. This is done several times to produce a good handful of mud daubers. You will never see a swarm of these insects and even if you step on their nest or swat at them they are unlikely to bother you at all. They would far prefer to run away and start a new nest somewhere else than try to fight something large than a field mouse.

If you have them on your property and you want them gone you can try building a wasp catcher. Mix some old rotting fruit with apple cider vinegar and some water in a clear plastic jug. The wasps will fly in to get the food and won’t be able to escape. They won’t know the difference between clear plastic and nothing and will just bounce around inside the jug until the vinegar suffocates them. If they land in it they will find it sticky and will lose the ability to fly. This sounds torturous but it’s a good way to affordably get rid of wasps.

Mud daubers are a great boon to the environment, they are pollinators and they protect from many insects that a lot of people do not like. They won’t hurt you or your family or pets but if you are truly worried you have nothing to fear. Killing them is a very easy process. You can spray the area with insecticide or use more effective insecticide dust. If that doesn’t work you have to call in a professional at Wasp Control.
