Raccoon Removal and Chimney Exclusion – Kitchener

Job Overview

Location: Kitchener, Ontario
Structure: Detached bungalow with attached garage
Problem: Morning attic noises consistent with wildlife activity
Service: Wildlife removal and roofline exclusion
Visits: 2

Summary

We responded to a report of repeated attic noises at a residential bungalow in Kitchener. An inspection confirmed wildlife access through an open chimney. Although the initial concern was squirrel activity, a raccoon was identified as the animal using the structure. Humane exclusion and roofline sealing were completed over two visits, with follow-up confirmation that activity had ceased.

Background / Property Context

The property is a detached bungalow with multiple roof penetrations, including a masonry chimney, roof vents, and plumbing vents. Mature trees surround the home, providing easy roof access for climbing wildlife.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported hearing movement in the attic during the morning hours and requested an inspection to determine the cause and prevent further entry.

Inspection & Findings

Our team conducted a full exterior and interior inspection. The primary entry point was identified at the chimney, which was open and unprotected. Additional roof features, including roof vents and plumbing vents, were assessed and found to be vulnerable to wildlife access. Based on size indicators and access patterns, the animal was identified as a raccoon rather than a squirrel.

Cause Analysis

Open or unprotected chimneys provide direct vertical access into attic spaces. In this case, surrounding trees and roof proximity made the chimney and vent openings easily reachable. Once access is established, raccoons will continue to use the entry point unless it is properly excluded and reinforced.

Treatment / Removal

A humane, non-lethal exclusion approach was used. During the first visit, our technician installed a raccoon-specific one-way door along with a secondary baby door to ensure dependent animals could exit safely. This allowed the raccoon to leave the structure without re-entry.

Exclusion & Repairs

To prevent future access, multiple roofline exclusions were completed:

  • The chimney opening was enclosed with a custom-fitted galvanized steel chimney cage.
  • Two roof vents were sealed with galvanized steel vent guards.
  • Three plumbing vents were reinforced using galvanized steel mesh.

All materials were mechanically fastened and shaped to maintain airflow while preventing wildlife entry.

Outcome & Confirmation

On the second visit, the homeowner confirmed that all wildlife activity had stopped. The one-way doors were removed, and all exclusion work was inspected and confirmed secure. No further wildlife issues were reported, and the job was considered complete.

Technician Notes

The work was completed over two visits by our technician, Shaohua, following humane wildlife control standards. Roof access limitations were managed safely, and all identified entry points were addressed during the service.
