Summary
We completed a two-visit skunk removal project at a two-story detached home in Kitchener after the homeowner reported skunk activity on the property. During the inspection, our technicians, Andrew and Shaohua, confirmed that a skunk had established a den beneath the rear deck. A humane one-way door was installed at the active entrance, followed by an extensive underground exclusion system using galvanized steel mesh to prevent future burrowing.
Background / Property Context
The property featured an elevated rear deck with enclosed skirting, creating a sheltered space beneath the structure. The surrounding soil and landscaping provided favourable conditions for skunks to excavate a den underneath the deck.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported seeing skunk activity around the deck and was concerned that the animal had taken up residence beneath the structure. They requested a humane removal solution that would also prevent future access.
Inspection & Findings
Andrew inspected the property and confirmed active skunk activity beneath the deck. Due to the size of the exclusion project, Shaohua assisted with the installation.
Inspection findings included:
- An active den entrance beneath the deck skirting.
- Fresh excavation and disturbed soil around the perimeter of the deck.
- Multiple sections where wildlife could continue burrowing beneath the structure if left unprotected.
- A large perimeter requiring underground exclusion to provide long-term protection.
The photographs show excavation around the deck, the installation of galvanized steel mesh extending below grade, the one-way door installed over the active den entrance, and the completed exclusion system before the trench was backfilled.
Cause Analysis
Enclosed decks provide sheltered, protected spaces that are attractive denning locations for skunks. Soft soil around the perimeter allows animals to dig beneath the structure and establish access points. Installing galvanized steel mesh below ground level helps prevent future burrowing while allowing animals to exit the den safely through a one-way door.
Treatment / Removal
During the initial visit, Andrew confirmed the active den and installed a humane one-way door over the primary entrance beneath the deck.
Additional work included:
- Installation of one one-way door over the main entry point.
- Installation of approximately 56 feet of galvanized steel mesh in a trench around the deck perimeter to prevent future burrowing.
Exclusion & Repairs
After monitoring confirmed that the skunk had exited the den, we returned for the second visit. The one-way door was removed, the remaining entry point was permanently sealed, and the underground exclusion system was inspected to confirm it remained secure before the excavation was backfilled.
Outcome & Confirmation
At the final visit, the homeowner reported no further skunk activity beneath the deck. The one-way door was removed, all exclusion work was confirmed to be secure, and no additional wildlife activity was observed or reported.
